Water conservation in golf is a hot topic and whit the current global warming, a topic that becomes extremely important in the near future. Between-us recently found in a pilot with five Catalan golf courses, that courses can save up to €550.000,- per year on water use, independent of reputational effects. Time to ask long-time expert in sustainable golf and chairman of the International Sustainability Council, Mr. Ronald G. Dodson for his opinion:

Golfing destination Catalunya: Sustainability holds positive business case for top courses

Results released of sustainability research with five Catalan top golf venues
In Barcelona, International CSR consultancy and initiator of the Sustainable Golf Project, Between-us, revealed the results of the research project on sustainability with five Catalan courses. The courses were benchmarked on people, planet, profit issues according to the benchmark methodology of the Sustainable Golf Project. The study revealed that although the Catalan courses consume less water than the sector average, they can save significant amounts. Based upon consumer pricing this can add up to €900.000,- per year on eco-efficiencies such as water- and energy use.

How active are European golf events on sustainability?
Golf courses and golf events need to become more sustainable. The Dutch Golf Federation invests €250k for certification of golf courses by the Golf Environmental Organization (GEO). A recurring issue at golf courses in southern Europe is water management. To preserve golf courses, large amounts of water are needed. Water, that especially in these regions is scarce. An innovation to combat this problem is bio-membrane technology.

Case: Magic in Marrakech

Stakeholder coalition develops best practice for water management
Marrakech, the Moroccan Imperial city, is strategically located close to the Atlas mountains. In the early days, the city was the gateway to the Sahara desert and over the years, Marrakech developed into a unique touristic destination. An interesting destination also for golf tourism, showing the many golf courses around Marrakech. With 24.000ha, high summer temperatures, a total population of 950.000 people and nineteen courses, water is a valuable asset.
